In Memory: John Patrick O’Grady, Jr.
John Patrick O’Grady, Jr., a resident of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL, passed away on Thursday July 20, 2023. John was born in New York, NY and was the son of John Patrick and Marion Irene (nee Donnellan) O’Grady.
John grew up on North Manursing Island in Rye, NY and graduated from Canterbury High School in 1970 and later from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. John resided in New York City for most of his life until relocating to Florida in 2020.
John was the President of Laurel Hill Securities, LLC and previously Chief Operating Officer of Georgeson Securities Corporation. He held professional qualifications including FINRA Series 7, 63 and 24 registrations and was the registered General Securities Principal (GP) for the two aforementioned broker dealers.
John was an accomplished bass vocalist and member #89 of the Georgetown Chimes. John founded the annual Chimes event known as the Cherry Tree Massacre, which has been running each February for 50 years and is one of the longest-running a capella shows on the East Coast. Throughout his life he never missed a chance to sing, whether with the Chimes, his parish choir, friends or family. He was known for his wit and kindness, which were often exhibited through his oratory gifts while telling a tale or raising a glass with loved ones. He was known for his generous and friendly spirit, and made friends wherever he went. John will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know him.
John is predeceased by his parents John Patrick and Marion Irene (nee Donnellan) O’Grady and sister Ann Grace O’Grady. He is survived by three sisters: Joan O’Grady Barada (Drew) of Portola Valley, CA, Marion O’Grady of Nantucket, MA, and Adele O’Grady Botticelli (James, deceased) of New York, NY and Nantucket, MA; nieces: Anna Clare Hackney (Hunter) of Mendham Township, NJ, and Sydney, Caroline, and Grace Barada of Portola Valley, CA; nephews: Joshua Graver (Bridget) of Summit, NJ, and Sean Barada of Portola Valley, CA; grand-nieces: Glenna and Caitlin Graver of Summit, NJ; grand-nephews: Ryan Graver of Summit, NJ, and Henry, Hugh, and Hoyle Hackney of Mendham Township, NJ; as well as numerous friends and extended relatives.
The family will receive friends at the Graham Funeral Home on Friday July 28, 2023, from 3-6 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday July 29, 2023, at 10 AM at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. The Mass will be livestreamed for those who can not attend in person. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
