John R. Black was born on March 8, 1931, in Rye, New York to William and Gertrude Black. He lived at 43 New Street with his parents and six siblings.

John graduated from Rye High School in 1949, before which he was on the school football and track teams. He was the first person in school history to break the five minute mile.

He enlisted as a private in the U.S. Marine Corps immediately following his high school graduation. John worked in reconnaissance operations for the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His older brother, James, also served in Korea – but for the Air Force.

John passed away on February 20, 2017, at the age of 86. More on Black.
