Rye Real Estate Update January 2009 – Summer Camps in Rye

Forty four homes have sold in the past six months in Rye City, as opposed to eighty during the same time period last year - that is quite a change! Ten or approximately 23% were under $1,000,000 for an average price of $734,250 and 34 or just over 77% sold for over the $1,000,000 mark for an average sales price of $2,423,029.

There were fifty four houses on the market in Rye when we did our January 2008 update, while the inventory swelled to 121 houses on the local market for sale in our August post. Typically, some sellers  temporarily withdraw their homes during the winter holidays, and I anticipate that we will see more homes come on in the coming months. We are seeing new buyers cautiously coming out of hiding, primarily young professionals from the city with one or two small children, looking to take advantage of lower interest rates and find more space in a town with well regarded schools, but many are looking for signs of stability and hoping for credit to loosen up.

Rye Summer Camps

There's snow in the ground, and the holiday decorations are being packed away, so its time to think about…summer camp?  Yes, some camps start registration in January for the upcoming season, just like preschools. Here is a brief rundown of some local options:

The Rye YMCA summer camps brochure is out and registration has already started for returning campers. The "Y" offers a variety of different camp programs for children ranging in age from 3 year old Discovery Camp, several specialty and sports camps, to Teen Extreme adventures in Costa Rica and Alaska. Mail in registration for new campers starts January 19th, and after February 1st, you can register at the member services desk. Over 600 children participate in Rye Recreation's affordable camp programs, ranging from 3 hour Kiddy Camp for pre schoolers to Camp 78 for Middle school teens with excursions to Lake Compounce, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, Six Flags Great Adventure, and more. This year the program will run from July 7th to August 15th. Download the application or call 967-2535.  Registration starts March 19th.

The Rye Nature Center serves about 400 children in its summer ecology programs. Walk in registration begins at 8 a.m. on February 28th and programs are available for pre schoolers up to grade 5. Check the website for further details.

It should be noted that the above camps do accept children on scholarship who qualify and also accept applications for teen "CITs" or Counselors-In-Training, who work in exchange for community service credit. The private clubs in Rye also hold a variety of camp programs. City owned Rye Golf Club offers junior golf clinics and a swimming and diving team.

There are smaller mini camps that have yet to be announced- the Rye Historical Society has held a "hands on history" camp and Marshlands Conservancy has held a camp program in the past.  The Rye Arts Center offers music and art programs. Of course, there are many private day camps too numerous to mention, such as the popular Soundview Sports program. Westchester County Government runs some programs, including the Slam Dunk Basketball Camp that my youngest son attends at the Westchester County Center (it's great- all air conditioned!).
