Rye Girls Varsity Field Hockey wasted no time building off their dominant 5-0 season-opening victory on Thursday with another shutout on Saturday, as the Garnets took down the Yorktown Huskers by a 2-0 final. Rye has yet to cede a goal through two full contests.
Beau Whaling opened the scoring early in the second half, finally breaking through against Yorktown’s Annie Durante after great pressure from the Garnets. Kate Morreale picked up her first of two assists on the day on the icebreaking tally. It’s Whaling’s fourth goal already in just two games.
Caroline Doyle scored Rye’s second of the night with just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter, assisted by Issy Mann along with Morreale. Doyle has now also scored in both games so far for Rye. Whaling, Doyle, Morreale, and Mann all have multiple points through the team’s first two games.
Tessa Zicari stopped all three shots she faced in the game, as Rye dominated play throughout and did not need Zicari to be a hero. She played her role perfectly to earn her second shutout in as many games.
“Our defense made huges stands on corners and fast break pushes by Yorktown,” Assistant Coach Theresa Jelalian told MyRye.com after the game. “We are starting to read each other well and everything is clicking.”
