The Rye Softball team qualified for the postseason with a 7-3 victory over Scarsdale on Friday, May 16. The Garnets celebrated senior Ava Cross in their final home game of the year with a clutch win to extend their season at least one more game.

“After a rough start to the season, we were able to turn our season around and have qualified for the playoffs,” Head Coach Alex Tejera told MyRye.com after the game. “Proud of the team for all their hard work.”

Penelope Gilmore cruised in the circle for the Garnets, allowing 0 earned runs in a complete game win. Caroline Joyce paced the offense with three hits, two doubles, a run batted in, and a run scored. Clara Meszkat (2-2, walk, run) and Ava Cross (2-3, 2B, RBI, run) both had multiple hits as well. Ava Rollano and Emma Stark each recorded a hit and a stolen base. It was a busy day for the offense, who could’ve had more than just seven runs on 11 hits.

Cross was honored before the game for her contributions to the Rye Softball program as a four-time varsity letter winner. “It has been an absolute pleasure coaching you these last four years,” Tejera said in a message to his longtime player and current captain. “Thank you for all you have done. You will be deeply missed. Congratulations and good luck in the future.”

Cross and the rest of the Garnets (6-11-1, 4-4) have the playoffs to look forward to next, which begin on Sunday, May 18, at Westalke High School. They have successfully earned the right to keep their season alive despite starting 0-7.
