LoHud.com on Rye Garnet Victory Over Harrison
LoHud.com has a write-up on the Garnet victory:
“HARRISON – There were Declan Lavelle’s wildest dreams and then what happened Saturday.
All week, the Rye sophomore fought to suppress his daydreams — the good, the bad, the pressure, the fans. He knew from experience what his first Rye-Harrison game might look like; he just tried to ignore the image.
“I just tried to keep my mind off of it,” Lavelle said. “Coming in here today, I was eager to get on the field. There were definitely nerves but a lot of excitement.”
The young quarterback not only overcame the moment, he delivered arguably the best passing day in the storied 88-year history of “The Game.” Lavelle went a turnover-free 23 of 32 for 377 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Garnets past the rival Huskies, 35-7, and into the series lead for the first time in 51 years.
Lavelle engineered an offense that gained 537 yards.
“The kid’s a stud and he stepped up to the big stage,” said senior wide receiver Gavin Kenny, who had five catches for 117 yards, including a 96-yard touchdown. “I think he did a hell of a job.””
