Rye Varsity Head Coach Pete Thomas has named his MVP for the 2026 season: junior Fernando Mosquera.
“Fernando was outstanding for us in net all season long,” Thomas told MyRye.com. “No matter who the opponent was, how important the game was, our how big the spotlight, Fernando stood tall.”
Mosquera earned MVP after the team held a vote. This is his second consecutive year winning MVP, and both have been well deserved.
The junior goaltender was instrumental in allowing Rye to progress to and through the New York State postseason, and becomes the first goalie to win a State championship as a Garnet. He allowed just one goal in the Regional championship against Aquinas and again in the State title game against Byram Hills. In some of the Garnets’ signature regular season wins – such as a sweep of Suffern and an OT victory over Rye Country Day – Mosquera rose to the occassion.
“He has a calmness about him that allows him to perform at his best when the game is on the line,” Thomas continued. “That confident calm ripples through our entire team. Our players go out and play hard and free, without fear of mistakes, because they know that “Nando” is back there to pick them up.”
Mosquera was named to the All-New York State First Team for his incredible regular season, and was voted the team MVP by his teammates during Rye’s end of season dinner on Wednesday, March 25. He still has another year of eligibility remaining to try to bring Rye to even more hockey glory in 2026.
