Athlete of the Month is a series where MyRye.com profiles the best athletes of each month throughout the academic year, as selected by Rye Athletics. Today, we look at senior Will Weinman of the Rye Hockey team, who earned Rye High School’s Athlete of the Month honors for March 2026.

“Will was tremendous for us this season,” Head Coach Pete Thomas told MyRye.com. “He has [always] been a top shut-down defenseman, but in addition to that this year, he became a scoring threat as well.”

Weinman scored 25 points in 25 games for the Garnets, who won their first New York State championship in program history on March 15. The right-handed defenseman scored a power-play goal in the clinching victory over Byram Hills. He also scored in the State semifinals one day prior, tying the score at 2-2 with just 2:22 to play in Rye’s season. Thomas attributes Weinman’s confidence to his calm confidence as a player.

“No matter the situation, Will was in control and performed for us,” the head coach said. “That is what makes Will the special player and person he is. He never shies away from the brightest lights.”

Weinman capped off his four-year varsity career by serving as a team captain in 2026. His combination of leadership and on-ice performance paved the way for Rye Hockey to win a State title for the first time ever.

“As good as he was on the ice, [Weinman] was even better as a person and leader off the ice,” Thomas told MyRye.com. “In his four years, I have seen him grow into a tremendous leader who is able to command the respect of the coaching staff, his teammates, and our opponents. Will has left an indelible mark on the history of the Rye Hockey program.”

Weinman becomes the seventh Rye High School senior to win Athlete of the Month, joining Phoebe Greto (girls basketball, February 2026, Jack Anderson (wrestling, January 2026), Carson Miller (football, December 2025), Clare Nemsick (girls soccer, November 2025), Lex Cox (boys soccer, October 2025) and Emma Lunstead (volleyball, September 2025).
