The Rye Boys Tennis team collected their first loss of the 2026 season on Monday, April 13, losing to Mamaroneck in a close 4-3 battle. The Garnets were looking to win their second match of the year against the Tigers, who came out on Monday with a healthier squad and eked past the hampered Garnets.

“Down two starters, Rye had to reload and change up some doubles combinations,” Head Coach Sue Dickson told MyRye.com. “The match was close for many of the spots.”

On the day, Rye went just 1-2 in supertiebreakers and the fourth doubles team of Rajan Patel and Dylan Smailes lost their second set standard tiebreaker 8-6. If any of those results had flipped, the Garnets may well have escaped the home contest with a close-shave victory.

At first singles, Henry Groves stayed perfect on the year, winning 6-0, 6-0. The top doubles team of stalwart Lou Kim-Reuter and new partner Marcos Becker also swept 6-0, 6-0. Rye’s only other win came courtesy of second singles player Luke Gordon, who won 6-1, 4-6 (10-8) in an extremely tight matchup with Max Roger of Mamaroneck.

The Garnets fell in third singles (Timothy Morell) and fourth doubles in straight sets, although both were competitive throughout. Their second doubles pairing of Xavier Morell and Tayga Vural lost a supertiebreak 7-10, and the third doubles (Nate Bertisch and Carter Hudspeth) dropped the extra set 3-10 after winning set one 6-0.

“We had opportunities to pull out a winm but Mamaroneck never quit,” Dickson continued. “It was the closest match of the season… Rye guys played with heart and supported each other in the best way.”

The Garnets (4-1) have little time to recover, as they host one of their top rivals, Horace Greeley, at 4:30pm tomorrow, Tuesday 4/14.
