Overview:
Rye City Council is set to hold a second public hearing on June 8th regarding a proposed six-month building moratorium. The moratorium would affect development in the Central Business District, adjoining B-1 and B-2 Districts, Rye Country Day School campus, and multi-family buildings with 6 or more units.

After a very contentious discussion on a proposed six-month building moratorium at the Rye City Council meeting last Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, there will be a second public hearing this coming Monday, June 8th at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held in the council chambers at Rye City Hall.
The council had originally chosen Thursday morning, June 4th, for the continued public hearing. Then, late in the meeting on May 27 after many people had left, Dr. Stacey Sotirhos, the interim Head of School at Rye Country Day School, ask the Council to move the date as the school has its various graduations this week. Rye Country Day School and its planned expansion on the Thruway property would be directly impacted by the moratorium.
The specific agenda item states:
“Continue the public hearing to consider a Local Law adopting a sixmonth moratorium in the City of Rye temporarily prohibiting the review, processing or approval of any application in: 1) the Central Business District; 2) the B-1 and B-2 Districts adjoining the Central Business District; 3) redevelopment/development of the Rye Country Day School campus; and 4) multi-family buildings involving 6 or more units”
The hearing on the moratorium is the sole agenda item for Monday evening. The next regular City Council meeting will be two days later on Wednesday, June 10th at 7:00pm for the public session.
