The Rye Boys Soccer team kept their unbeaten season alive on Saturday, October 31, as they stunned Walter Panas 3-2 in overtime. The dramatic win secured the Garnets their third consecutive sectional title and ensuing trip to the regional playoffs.
Sophomore Connor Dehmer scored the championship goal with under five minutes to play before penalty kicks. The ball bounced at his feet after a corner kick from recent athlete of the month Peter Wilmot rattled around the box. With the teams playing a golden goal format, the tally instantly sent Rye to the state playoffs.
Prior to overtime, Felix Wismer scored to tie the game in the second half on an athletic header. His goal came just moments after the Panthers grabbed the second-half 2-1 lead. The team played to a tie after the first 40 minutes, with Alex Dodge Terra scoring the Rye goal to originally break the ice.
In OT, the Panthers had the first grade-A chance, but Wismer blocked a great look from inside the box. That play set up the electrifying winner for Dehmer.
Rye (19-0-1, 4-0 postseason) continue their magical season in the regional semifinals on Tuesday, November 3, against Section 9’s Our Lady of Lourdes. The game is set for 6:15pm at Byram Hills High School.
