Rye Golf Club, the subject of all sorts of scandal and lousy management, is looking for an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. The job isting reports the facility "has over 700 golfing members and hosts between 25,000 and 30,000 rounds of golf".
It looks to be a demanding position in exchange for $50K in comp: "Qualified candidates must have at least an associate’s degree in agronomy/turf management (or a closely related field) in addition to a minimum of two years’ experience in turf management. Working knowledge of drainage and experience with golf course construction projects is preferable. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on assistant that leads by example. Interested candidates must already have, or have the ability to obtain, a New York State Pesticide Applicator’s License… Qualified candidates will be able to work 60 hours or more per week in season…"
The club definitely needs an expert in pesticide application.

Assistant Golf Course Superintendent
Club Information
Rye Golf Club is a private club located in Rye, NY. The club is owned and operated by the City of Rye. RGC is home to a unique Deveroux Emmet designed 18-hole golf course. The course is laid out on a little more than 100 acres of land and features the only views of the Long Island Sound from a golf course in Westchester County. The club has over 700 golfing members and hosts between 25,000 and 30,000 rounds of golf.
The golf course superintendent, Chip Lafferty, is completing his 14th season as the club’s superintendent and his 19th season as a golf course superintendent. Under Chip’s tenure the golf course has experienced a significant increase in standards of maintenance and over all course conditions. The club is currently investing in several golf course related projects including greens expansions, installation of slit drainage, the addition of a new short game practice facility, and tree management under the advice of the USGA. A long term plan for the golf course includes developing significant improvements to the course’s irrigation system.
Responsibilities
Rye Golf Club is seeking a highly motivated individual with knowledge in all aspects of golf course maintenance. The assistant superintendent will be responsible for planning and applying fertilizers and pesticides, supervising grounds staff, and working with the clubs geese-dog(s). The assistant superintendent will be responsible for ensuring that the maintenance staff is meeting all standard operation procedures in the absence of the superintendent. The assistant superintendent will be responsible for exercising sound judgement regarding maintenance decisions in the absence of the superintendent.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates must have at least an associate’s degree in agronomy/turf management (or a closely related field) in addition to a minimum of two years’ experience in turf management. Working knowledge of drainage and experience with golf course construction projects is preferable. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on assistant that leads by example. Interested candidates must already have, or have the ability to obtain, a New York State Pesticide Applicator’s License.
Qualified candidates will be able to work 60 hours or more per week in season and understand that time off from May through September may be greatly limited. Qualified candidates will be able to meet all the physical demands of this position.
Compensation & Benefits
A competitive compensation package will be offered to the right candidate. Salary shall be a minimum of $50,000 per year in addition to subsidized health care plans (including vision & dental), life insurance, and enrollment in the New York State Retirement System. Additional benefits shall include uniforms, continued professional education & training, paid vacation, holidays, personal days, and accruable paid sick leave.
This position shall be a City of Rye Administrative Pay Group position.
