Wednesday was declared Arbor Day in the City of Rye, celebrating those woody perennial plants that have recently caused a lot of contention amongst our elected officials.

Rye Mayor Josh Cohn and Council Members Julie Souza and Carolina Johnson recognized Arbor Day in front of a new home at 5 Ormond Place where the DPW had just planted a Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) and an October Glory Maple, a female cultivar (not a straight native) of the Red Maple (Acer rubrum) in the City’s right of way in front of the home.

“If residents … are interested in having the City plant trees in the right of way, adjacent to their property, please contact the DPW,” said Mayor Cohn. He then made Arbor Day official “Now therefore, I, Josh Cohn, Mayor of the City of Rye, New York, do hereby proclaim May 31, 2023 as Arbor Day in the City of Rye, New York, and resolve I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well being of future generations.”

Residents can call DPW 914-967-7464 or email [email protected] to request a tree.
