Rye Girls Varsity Soccer toppled Albert Magnus on Sunday to win the Section 1 Class AA Girls Soccer Championship 2 – 0. The Garnets will now head to regional semi-finals.

“Rye had an incredible upset knocking off reigning NYS champion Albertus Magnus, a team that had not lost a game to a Section 1 team in two years and had only conceded 1 goal as well,” said Rye Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Rich Savage.

Rye started off extremely sharp, working as a perfect unit, holding shape and beating Albertus Magnus to most all 50/50 balls. Even though the conditions were difficult with the rain and wet field, Rye stayed composed and moved the ball around the field nicely.

During the second half, Rye would shock Magnus by finding the back of the net. Rye’s Lyla Keenan took an extremely low hard shot that ricocheted off the keeper and Rye’s Isabelle Harvey was there to tuck the ball into the back of the net. After the goal, Rye’s Isabelle Harvey was moved to defense to help prevent Albertus from getting the equalizing goal.

With 10 minutes remaining, Maddy Walsh would step in front intercepting a pass from a defender. Taking the ball to the corner of the field and drawing defenders to her, she passed the ball across the box to Paige Vanneck who scored a second goal for Rye.

Rye was the only team this season to prevent Albertus Magnus from scoring. Rye will head to Binghamton on Wednesday, November 1 at 5:30 pm for the regional semi-final match against Owego Free Academy from Section 4.

The team is 18 – 2. Watch the replay.
