Rye Boys Varsity Tennis stalked the Panthers of Edgemont on Thursday, winning the away double header matches 6 – 1 and 5 – 2, and bringing the regular season to an end with an overall record of 9-3.
Due to weather constraints, the strong forecast of rain on Friday, and the closing of the regular season, Rye ended up playing the double header match against Edgemont at Edgemont High School. The matches were truncated and the players entered an eight game pro-set with ad scoring for both matches instead of playing two out of three sets.
In the first match, Rye was victorious, 6-1 with strong wins from everyone. The only loss was a tiebreaker at first singles. Evidently, Henry Groves was playing with an injury. The second match was won 5-2. First singles defaulted and fourth doubles fell to a different team. Double wins for second singles Nicolas Echlov, third singles Luke Gordon, first doubles team of Alex Gordon and Matthew Templeman, second doubles Filip Glitterstam and Lou Kim-Reuter, third doubles Henry Paul and Henry Bagley. Ollie Lincoln and Ty Bibas split their matches, winning their first match and falling in the second.
Rye out powered their opponents for the most part and completed the regular season with an overall record of 8-3. With a depleted team due to illness, absence, and injury, everyone who was able to come and compete in the last matches of the season did their best.
“During the dual matches this year, the players improved with each competition and they finished out in a strong fashion, improving each competition,” said Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Sue Dickson.
“On the bus ride home, a captain mentioned it could be our last bus ride together this season, the crew actually grew silent. As per their fashion, the music was then cranked up and the spirited singing filled the little bus. What a great way to commemorate it all.”
