Father-Daughter from Rye Fight Pancreatic Cancer: Join Them Sunday
Tara Shanes-Hernandez and her father Stephen are at it again, raising big bucks this weekend to fight pancreatic cancer.
The Rye residents are the co-founders and co-organizers of the 2nd Annual Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk. Tara says the walk, being held this Sunday, April 10th, 2011 at Rye Town Park/Playland Park, "is in memory of my wonderful mom, Gigi Shanes-Hernandez. I grew up in Rye-Midland, RMS, and RHS '01 alum. My mom grew up in Rye as well Midland, RMS, and RHS alum as well."

Last year’s “Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk” raised over $129,000 for pancreatic cancer research. Gigi, a lifelong Rye resident, loved taking walks along scenic Long Island Sound with family and friends.
According to the National Cancer Institute, the overall 5-year relative survival rate for pancreatic cancer is just 5 percent. Despite these numbers, pancreatic cancer receives the least amount of federal research dollars among all leading cancers. All the money raised will be donated to The
Lustgarten Foundation, the country’s largest private supporter of pancreatic cancer research.
Rye High School and MS volunteers will also be helping at the walk as well as RHS a capella group Rythym on Rye. Registration begins at 8am Sunday. The walk starts at 9am. Go online to register to walk, donate, or volunteer.
