COLOR WARS OF A DIFFERENT COLOR
Auburn Maroons @ Rye Garnets @ Mahopac High School – Friday, November 15 @ 7:30PM
Oh for the joys of summer camps where participants, divided into teams identified by the colors of their t-shirts, engage in challenges such as tug-o-war, dodgeball, archery, basketball and other counselor made-up events. The “wars” typically consist of several events worth insignificant points, with one large grand finale with an outsized number of points keeping interest levels, and opportunities to steal a victory, high.
But in the New York State Class A East Quarter Finals it is Color Wars of a different color. Rye’s Garnets (9-1) host the Auburn Maroons (7-3). Located in the NYS Finger Lakes Region north of the northern tip of Lake Owasco, the third easternmost of the eleven lakes, Auburn has a 2006 Class AA State Championship pedigree and a potent offense. Almost midway between Syracuse and Rochester, and south of the New York State Thruway, these Maroons look to be formidable despite three losses as Auburn averaged 47 points in their seven victories, including one over Whitesboro continuing the Color Wars theme.
And those uniform colors of maroon and white with a large “A” on the helmets to match the Garnets “G” – a dejavue reminder of the Garnets back-to-back games with 90-year arch-rival, those Harrison Huskies. May the Garnets hold a similar advantage over Auburn as they have recently produced versus Harrison.
When two high octane teams meet sometimes the result is lower than one expects. If you haven’t noticed the Old Garnet always wears a Garnet and Black Color Wars outfit to all games, both home and away. So of course my numbers favor the Garnets. The Maroons yield over thirty points per game and the Garnets regularly put thirty-five on the scoreboard. Bingo, the math works. OG and Rye take the quarterfinal 35-21.
