203 COVID-19 Positives in Rye; 1,415 Westchester Resident Deaths – Monday, June 22, 2020

For Monday, Westchester reported the following City of Rye numbers:

203 total COVID-19 cases since inception;
1 active COVID-19 cases (this assumes the remaining 202 have run the average two week contagion cycle and are no longer active);
0 new COVID-19 cases

Rye guy and Westchester County boss George Latimer held his COVID-19 briefing from the Michaelian Office Building in White Plains. Latimer appeared with Matthew Honeycutt, VP of development for Feeding Westchester and discussed the food insecurity issues that have increased dramatically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Honeycutt said approximately 200,000 or 20% of Westchester residents were food insecure before the COVID-19 outbreak, with 30% of the total being children. Feeding Westchester believes these numbers have risen as much as 40% since the pandemic.

As part of its response, Westchester County Government has developed the Westchester Food Security Initiative (FSI), which will provide $3 million in additional support to food pantries, restaurants and food delivery programs through four different programs. The funding is comprised of Federal CARES Act funding with additional state and federal funding for the COVID-19 response. “The need is much more broad based during this crisis,” said Latimer.

The four programs include food pantries; food deliveries to home bound seniors and vulnerable populations; restaurant-based initiatives and the creation of a food security coordinator and updated database of food programs.
