Just like the onset of falling autumnal leaves, the Rye Garnets/HARRISON HUSKIES game drops in October, sometimes early, sometimes later. This Old Garnet can remember past rivalry games played in the snowfalls of Thanksgiving weekends.  This year Garnets/Huskies hits the first October weekend, very early if you ask the old-timers.

Oh how the worm has changed from predominantly Maroon and White to a preponderance of Garnet & Black. Since the ’03 regular season game and early playoff encounter, the Garnets have prevailed in 20 of the last 21 battles vaulting Rye ahead by a count of 48-42-3. This streak is unrivaled in the rivalry. Harrison had dominated the series in the ‘70s and ‘90s stashing a cushion of rivalry victories.  It took Rye forty-three years to finally pull ahead, the first time since ’74.

“THE GAME” is the highlight Section One football game annually with its 92-year history spanning 93 prior contests over 11 decades. This 94th rivalry renewal extends back three generations.

Hey boys it’s time to strap on the old leather helmets, cinch up the chin strap and prepare for battle. Play for your community, play for the past generations, play for your family, play for your siblings, play for your school, play for your friends, play for your team, play for your teammates and play for yourselves. Step onto the 50-yard line and take in your surroundings – the stadium filled to the brim, the bands playing, student sections vying, car horns honking and referee’s whistles.

“THE GAME” is for all the marbles, a full year of bragging rights. It’s the BIG ONE, unmatched in Westchester gridiron lore.  Kick-off is slated for 3:30PM at McGuillicuddy due to earlier day SAT testing.  If you want prime seats arrive early, long before the clock starts on Westchester’s finest high school football game.

Huskies Howl, Huskies Growl

Garnets Snarl, Garnets Prowl

The Old Garnet says, put your money on the red and black chips – Rye get #21 out of the last 22.  Rye 28 – Harrison 7.
