Memory Care at The Osborn: 9 Reasons for H.O.P.E.

One of the great appeals of The Osborn–in addition to its beautiful 56-acre Rye campus and top notch ratings–is the continuing care model. A loved one can enter The Osborn with her or his family knowing it offers the full array of care–from independent living to assisted living to memory care to skilled nursing.

The Osborn’s intimate H.O.P.E. Center for Memory Care addresses the challenge of keeping a loved one with memory challenges comfortable and engaged. The Center has thirteen private rooms with a living environment purpose-built for memory care. “Each person is an individual so it is imperative that we learn and understand as much as we can about each resident to personalize their care and make H.O.P.E. truly feel like home, says Jo-Ann Pinder, the memory care supervisor at the H.O.P.E. Center.”

We spoke with Pinder about the nine reasons to have H.O.P.E. and why The Osborn’s memory care program stands out.

  • #1 – It’s a Home. The H.O.P.E. Center is structured as a private home. Each of the 13 residents has her or his own private room and bath, and then enjoy common home spaces including a community kitchen and great room with a fireplace and entertainment center.

  • #2 – Staff Trained in Dementia Care. A home health and medication aide, Pinder is becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner and the memory care coordinators at H.O.P.E. each receive specialized training through ongoing education with a Certified Dementia Practitioner and also attend memory care seminars and workshops.
  • #3 – Activities–lots of them. Opportunities for social, artistic, educational, music, cooking, gardening and other experiences.
  • #4 – Staying in the Community. Did you know 25% of residents at The Osborn previously owned homes in Rye? And even more have family that live in and around the city? H.O.P.E. is in the community you already call home.
  • #5 – Being Outside. The H.O.P.E. Center has its own sunroom, and the 13 residents can safely explore the adjacent Betty Neagle Secure Wander Garden.

  • #6 – Staff as Family. With a dedicated staff and only 13 residents, everyone at H.O.P.E. is family.
  • #7 – Other Residents as Family. Residents enjoy the privacy of their bedroom and private bath while enjoying the camaraderie of all the activities available in the common areas.

  • #8 – Expertise to Spot Small Issues. Expert staff can spot small issues before they become big. For instance, UTIs are common in people with dementia because they are not always well hydrated. Cognitive aspects can potentially impact physical well-being.
  • #9 – Skilled Nursing is Right There. Many that suffer from dementia will eventually need skilled nursing–on a temporary or a permanent long term care basis. That service is right next door at The Osborn’s Pavilion when needed.

Who has the most difficulty choosing H.O.P.E.? “Oftentimes the son or daughter has promised Mom or Dad that they can continue to live independently and struggle with the decision to choose H.O.P.E.,” says Pinder. “People end up actually doing better and families are very surprised when they come into a community how much better they’re doing, because they have a lot more socialization, they’re having activities.”
