Rye Historical Society and Leaders of Tomorrow to Commemorate July 4th with Revolutionary Rye 250 Celebration
The Rye Historical Society, in collaboration with Leaders of Tomorrow, proudly announces a
special event to honor American independence on Thursday, July 4, at 10:00am, at Village Green and Square. Additional guided tours of the Square House Inn and Tavern Museum commence at 11:00am and conclude at 12:30pm. Families with children can reserve a spot on these tours prior to Independence Day and reserve a costume for their little ones (breeches, waistcoats, tricorn hats for boys and dresses, aprons, bonnets for girls).
This event is an annual tradition in Rye which originally began on the steps of City Hall. The program was created by former Rye Mayor John Carey and is led by the Leaders of Tomorrow Educational Enrichment Organization. This event is not an official City of Rye observance, but is nonetheless organized and presented by several longstanding local residents and volunteers.
The event is set to include: a historical reenactment of Dr. Haviland, an important figure involved with the Rye Resolutions of 1774 (exactly 250 years ago); speeches and readings with historic significance; creative readings of the Declaration of Independence; patriotic songs and a flag unfurling; and other activites and tours. Admission to all facets of the event is free and open to the public to facilitate a great patriotic feeling on July 4th.
