Martin Edward Butler was born on June 26, 1932. He lived at 61 Purchase Street, Rye, with his parents, Mary Kate and Martin. Martin enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 following his graduation from Rye High School. He served in the Korean War for four years.

Upon his return, he attended Iona College and graduated in 1959. Martin eventually married Karen Torpey Butler, and the couple had four children: Suzanne, Julie, Mark, and John. He and his family returned to Rye and lived at 55 Hewlett Street.

Martin was very active in the Rye community. He served as the director of the Rye YMCA and the Rye chapter of the Red Cross, and vice president of Rye Little League and Rye Chamber of Commerce. 

He was also a Republican member of the Rye City Council for two years, but he resigned in 1973 due to health complications. Martin passed away on June 24, 1974, and he was survived by his wife and children who remained in Rye. More on Butler.
