James J. Black was born on March 1st, 1930, in Port Chester, New York to Gertude and William Black. He lived in Rye for most of his life with his parents and six siblings at 43 New Street.

Black attended Resurrection Grammar and Middle School and graduated from Rye High School in 1948. He was on the football team and the track team, and in high school he was known for always showing up late to class.
Black served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. One of his brothers, John, also served in Korea but as a Marine.
Following his service, Black had five children and ten grandchildren. He unfortunately passed away on March 24, 2017. He was 87. More on Black.
