Nils Benson was born in Rye, New York on October 12, 1923, the son of Emma and Nils Benson. He had one brother, Karl, and two sisters, Anna and Bertha. He graduated from Rye High School, class of 1942 and attended Syracuse University. In Rye his family lived at 68 Railroad Avenue (present-day Theodore Fremd Avenue).

Benson enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served with the 5th Air Force in the Pacific.
Benson married Audrey Adamson on May 1, 1948, in Rye, New York. They had three children during his marriage. Benson was President of the Penn Elastic Company in New York City, a subsidiary of Courtaulds of Great Britain. He was also a former President of the Coveleigh Club in Rye, as well as a member of the Union League Club in New York City and a member of the Board of Governors of the Continental Can Company.
Nils E. Benson died on December 4, 2014, in Norwalk, Connecticut, at the age of 91. He was survived by his wife Audrey, his son Andrew, and daughters Nancy McKittrick and Diane Cummings. He was also survived by eight granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. More on Benson.
