The Rye Baseball Team narrowly escaped a late comeback effort by Pearl River on Wednesday, May 21, holding on for a 6-5 win to advance to the Class A semifinals. Rye saw a 6-1 advantage shrink to just one skinny run, but strong relief pitching led the way for the Garnets in their 14th straight win.
Charlie Rupp earned his second four-out save of the season, striking out two Pirates. Jack Sheridan picked up the victory with 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing only one run. He is now 6-1 on the year. All three pitchers who entered the game Wednesday are expected to be available for the semifinals, although a deep staff means Head Coach Michael Bruno may not necessarily need to use them.
Lucan London led the offense in a 2-3 showing with 2 runs batted in. Harry Ellis and Rupp also doubled and recorded an RBI.
#2 Rye (18-3) advances to the semifinals on Saturday, May 24, where they will host #3 Nanuet at Disbrow Field. The Golden Knights are coming off a shutout win over Bronxville. The other side of the bracket sees #1 Panas take on surprise contender #13 Eastchester during the week. The Class A championship game would be Saturday, May 31.
