The Rye Boys Tennis team fell to Horace Greeley on Wednesday, May 7, by a 4-3 score. The teams started the match on April 10, and the Quakers barely got the better of the Garnets as it concluded on Wednesday.

“With Lou Kim-Reuter out sick, Rye had to default first doubles who clearly would have had a win,” Head Coach Sue Dickson admitted to MyRye.com. “Evening it off, Horace Greeley had to default second singles as they too were missing a player.”

Close calls on several points cost Rye at third singles, although none of their singles matchups found much success. “It was a bit of a shame that there was controversy with some scores and line calls in the third singles match,” Dickson told MyRye.com. The Quakers won all three singles matchups and their top doubles win by default was enough to win the match. Perhaps an official referee would have caused a different outcome.

Elsewhere, Marcos Becker and Tayga Vural shined at third doubles (6-3, 6-1), and Nate Bertisch and Carter Hudspeth came away with a clutch victory at fourth doubles. The Rye duo won the first set 6-3 and then the supertiebreaker 7-2 to help Rye inch closer. “It was their best match of the season,” Dickson said.

“The loss was unfortunate; we were so close.”

Rye (5-4) has lost three in a row despite playing close with all their opponents. They will look to get back on track in a quick turnaround, as they host John Jay-Cross River tomorrow, Thursday 5/8, at 4:30pm at Rye Recreation.
