Rye Girls Rugby Splits Friday Games vs Hudson Catholic, Harvey

The Rye Girls Rugby team defeated Hudson Catholic but lost to Harvey on Friday, May 16, winning their first game 31-5 but dropping the second half of the doubleheader 21-15. Rye is now 2-0 against the Hawks, with both wins being by the same 31-5 score, and 1-3 against Harvey.
“We played a terrific offensive game,” Head Coach Geri Jones said of her team’s game one victory. “Defensively, we played a strong game, holding Hudson Catholic to five points.”
Molly Kennedy continued her incredible season with two tries and three conversion kicks. Sofia Jovanovic followed up her first career try in the split last week with two more to supply additional insurance, and Molly Budke added a try as well.
In the second game, the Garnets battled tough with a physical Harvey school and fell short by just one possession. Despite the defeat, Jones was proud of her fatigued team’s effort in the final 14 minutes of the day.
“We played harder today than we have all season,” she told MyRye.com after game two. “We challenged their offense, made aggressive tackles, and passed well. We just couldn’t hang on at the end.”
Overall, the Garnets are now 6-4 on the year, and could be even better – half of their losses have been walk-off tries against. They are a strong team in the small league with just one more day of games left on the schedule. Rye plays New Rochelle and Horace Mann on the road on Thursday, May 22, to conclude the regular season.
