Rye Varsity Softball Head Coach Alex Tejera has named his MVP for the 2025 season: senior Ava Cross.
“Cross is not only an outstanding athlete, but a remarkable leader and teammate,” Tejera told MyRye.com. “She has set the standard for what it means to wear our uniform with pride, passion, and integrity.”
Cross slotted in as the first basemen and center-of-the-lineup fixture for Tejera and shined in both roles, playing exceptional defense and batting over .400 in her final season. She was one of the main reasons Rye was able to turn a tough start into a playoff appearance and upset win in round one. Beyond her statistical contributions, Tejera noted how Cross made everyone around her better.
“From the first day of practice, even though she was injured and could not participate, she gave everything she had — not only for herself, but for the entire team,” Tejera said. “She took the younger players under her wing and taught them what it meant to be part of our team.”
Cross earned an honorable mention for both the All-League and All-Section teams for her efforts in the spring. She was clutch at the plate and a difference maker in the field on a team that improved year-over-year from 2024 despite a significantly younger roster. Cross was the only senior.
Cross’ leadership abilities were not limited to her final year, or softball in general. “As she graduated we wish her nothing but the best in the future and know that she has left Rye Softball in a better place,” Tejera continued. “She balanced the demands of academics, athletics, and personal commitments with maturity and grace. We will truly miss her.”
