The Rye Football team handled business in Week 3 on September 26, as the Garnets defeated Clarkstown North 42-28 to improve to 4-0 on the season. The victory was Head Coach Dino Garr’s 365th at the helm, moving him into first place on the all-time New York State High School Football coaches’ win list. He is now the standalone winningest coach in NYS history.
Garr watched as his team scored 21 points in the second quarter to break a 0-0 tie, before adding on and extending the lead to 35-12. The Rams battled back and cut the deficit to just seven, but Charlie Garnett iced them with a 41-yard touchdown scamper. Garnett ran for three scores, with his other two being six and 18 yards. Henry Shoemaker caught two touchdown passes, including a 43-yard bomb to break the ice in quarter two, while Nigel Strazzini accounted for Rye’s last score.
“It became a struggle in the second half,” Garr told MyRye.com after the game. “We had to come together and get it done.”
The Rams would get no closer than 35-28. Garr admitted he thought his team battled rust throughout the night, which may have been caused by only two practice days during the week. Still, the Garnets scored six touchdowns – they don’t seem to need any WD-40.
Rye (4-0) looks ahead next to another home showdown on Saturday, October 4, as they host Yorktown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm under the light of Nugent Stadium, as Garr looks to add the leap day to his historic win total. Watch it here. Replay the 365th win of Garr’s career here.
