The Rye Football team did something nobody in Westchester County has done in recent memory, as they defeated the Somers Tuskers 17-7 on Friday, September 12. The victory instantly propels Rye into the upper echelon of teams in the state of New York, and was fueled by their stingy, grueling defense, and timely offensive plays.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” Head Coach Dino Garr told MyRye.com after the victory. “I am very pleased with the way we played.”

Neither team scored a touchdown until Henry Shoemaker’s hard-earned seven yard score in the third quarter, putting Rye ahead 10-0 in front of a raucous crowd. After a Somers response, Carson Miller found Sebastian Lewis for a clutch touchdown, giving the Garnets the 17-7 lead they would not relinquish.

Garr’s defense held strong against a very potent Somers offense, only allowing one scoring drive all night. They allowed 28 fewer points than when these teams last met in the 2024 State Championship game.

“The coaches did a great job preparing for their offense,” Garr said. “Holding them to one score is incredible.”

The win is a huge burst of adrenaline for the entire program, especially the returners from last year’s team. Nobody on either sideline was in high school when Somers last lost to a Westchester County opponent, Garr recalls, which was Rye almost half a decade ago.

Rye (2-0) plays next at Fox Lane on Friday, September 19. Kickoff is set for 6:30pm for the road tilt in Week 2. Watch the win over Somers here.
