The Rye Field hockey team stayed hot on Tuesday, September 30, defeating Yorktown 4-2 on the road. The Garnets were outshot 11-7, but strong goaltending and excellent finishing propelled them to their fourth consecutive victory and eighth overall to cap off the first month of play.
One of the key plays of the game came early, as Rye took advantage of a Yorktown mistake near the end of the first quarter. “Time expired at the end of the first quarter and we were able to draw a corner,” Head Coach Valerie Perkins described to MyRye.com. “Our team did a great job of keeping the ball in play and Liv Prata was able to score and to make it 2-0.”
Prata’s goal was a crushing blow to a Yorktown team that played a good first 12 minutes, but found themselves trailing by a pair. They could never overcome the deficit, as the Garnets matched them goal for goal for the final three quarters. Beau Whaling, Issy Mann, and Kaitlyn Coyne all found the back of the net along with Prata.
The story for the second straight game, however, was goaltender Chloe Holden. Coming off a Herculean performance in an upset against Lakeland, Holden stood tall once again, making nine saves on eleven shots. She now has 22 saves in her last two games combined, compared to just three goals against. For reference, Yorktown’s goaltender Sam Conboy made three saves on seven shots – an average performance.
Rye (8-1) next plays on Saturday, October 4, at 3:00pm. The Garnets travel to John Jay-Cross River to take on the Wolves for a late afternoon showdown. Perkins and her group will be looking to win their fifth consecutive game dating back to September 17.
