The #3 Rye Girls Soccer team shut out #2 Tappan Zee 4-0 on Thursday, October 29, ending the Zee’s 12-game winning streak and advancing to the Section 1 Class A championship game. The Garnets led basically from the start of the game to pitch their third consecutive postseason shutout and 14th overall on the season.
“From the opening whistle, Rye set the tone,” Head Coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com on Thursday. “The back line – Clare Nemsick, Ella Fleckton, and Julia Carballo – completely neutralized Tappan Zee’s prolific scorer, who entered the game with more than 100 career goals.”
It did not take long for the Garnets to assert themselves against their white-hot opponent, as midfielder Hannah Jachman scored just five minutes into the match, and again in the 25th minute, to put her team in front 2-0. Clare Nemsick added another off an assist from Shira Rand to make it three to zero after forty minutes. Harkin Brown put the cherry on top in the second half with the final goal of the game for either team.
Rye (16-0-3) is outscoring their opponents 11-0 through three playoffs games, including their recent one over Tappan Zee on the road, in the rain, during normal school hours. Their last hurdle in the sectional tournament is Pleasantville – that highly-anticipated matchup is set for 11:00am on Sunday, November 2. Rye will be looking to capture their third straight sectional title. Replay the Tappan Zee win here.
