The Rye Boys Soccer team beat up on John Glenn in the Regional finals on Saturday, November 7, winning 5-0. The Garnets continue their match towards a state title while also earning another trophy in the process.
“We were at our best today in every facet, and the scoreline doesn’t reflect the toughness and courage required to win today’s match,” Head Coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “We were mentally and physically tough from start to finish.”
The balanced Garnets scored three times in the first half and twice more in the second to account for the offensive outburst. Kasen Scarperi opened the scoring in the 9th minute, quickly followed by another goal from Scarperi on an assist from Felix Wismer. The duo connected again with just two seconds remaining in the half, this time with Wismer finishing the play.
As John Glenn pressed to start the second half, Rye scored in the counterattack, as Scarperi completed the hat trick. The talented forward ended the night with seven points. Alec Dodge Terra closed the book with a fifth goal off a throw-in as Rye coasted to the celebration, masterfully shutting down a John Glenn offense that averaged well over three goals per game through their first 20 contests.
“Fantastic effort from the lads to earn another trophy,” Small continued. “Defenders Harrison Zimmer, Cole Furber, Christian Hofmann, and Lex Cox were excellent in their 1-v-1 defending, and goalkeeper Will Alexander made a number of strong claims on aerial balls in both halves.”
Rye (18-1-3, 6-0 postseason) marches on to the New York State semifinals, which take place on Saturday, November 15. This is just the second time since 1979 (2019) that the Garnets will play on this stage. The semifinal match is scheduled for 5:45pm at Middletown’s Faller Field.
