The Rye Boys Soccer team defeated Section IX champion New Paltz on Wednesday, November 5, by the lopsided score of 5-0. The victory ends the Huguenots’ season and propels the Garnets to the Regional championship round in dominant fashion.
“We played a good first half, and an excellent second half,” Head Coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “A clean sheet is always nice at this stage of the competition, so we’re pleased with that… and our forwards all came to play today, so there’s a lot of positive from that.”
Rye’s first two goals came within moments of each other in the 18th and 20th minute. The first was scored by Felix Wismer (his 15th of the season) after a full-field buildup starting from Will Alexander in goal. Then, Alec Dodge Terra scored from close range to double the lead. Both first half tallies were assisted by Kasen Scarperi, who upped his season total to 20 assists and 40 points.
It was Connor Dehmer’s early second-half goal that put the game out of reach for New Paltz – the dagger, if you will. His individual effort peaked with a whizzing strike past the Huguenots’ goalkeeper for his first of the match and 15th of the year.
“Up 3-0, Rye was now able to find a flow and confidence that served them well for the final 38 minutes,” Small said of Dehmer’s electrifying goal. The freshman would score again for his team-leading 16th goal of the season to make it 4-0 Garnets.
Dodge Terra assisted on Wismer’s first goal and Dehmer’s second tally to go along with his first half goal, adding a free kick goal with time about to expire to close out a remarkable six-point performance. The Brazilian defender now has 11 goals and 11 assists for 33 points on the year.
Rye (17-1-3, 5-0 postseason) marches on to the Regional finals (State quarterfinals) on Saturday, November 8. They match up with Section 11’s John Glenn High School at 11:00am at Yorktown High School. Both teams are three wins away from a New York State championship.
