A Rye woman has died in a three car accident on Interstate 95 in Connecticut.
The accident occurred Monday afternoon and caused the closure of I-95 for a number of hours.
On Monday, December 22, 2025, at approximately 4:45pm, Connecticut State Troopers from Troop G responded to a three-car motor vehicle collision on Interstate 95 Southbound in the area of the exit 3 entrance ramp from Field Point Road in the Town of Greenwich.
Preliminary investigation by police revealed a Mazda operated by Michael Mattelson of Purdys, NY (Vehicle #1) was traveling southbound on Interstate 95 in the left lane of three, approximately one hundred feet south of the exit 3 entrance ramp from Field Point Road, in the Town of Greenwich. Porche operated by Anne Stark Locher of Greenwich (Vehicle #2) was traveling beside Vehicle #1 in the center lane. A Subaru operated by Jill Newmark Haskel of Rye (Vehicle #3) was traveling behind Vehicle #1 and Vehicle #2 in the left lane.
For an unknown reason, Vehicle #3 approached from the rear, failed to maintain its lane, crossed partly into the center lane, and struck the rear driver side corner of Vehicle #2. Vehicle #3 subsequently spun in a clockwise manner perpendicular to the roadway, rolled onto the rear portion of Vehicle #1, and slid along the roadway on its driver side body. Vehicle #1 came to uncontrolled final rest in the left lane. Vehicle #2 came to controlled final rest in the right shoulder. Vehicle #3 came to uncontrolled final rest in the left lane on its driver side body.
Michael Mattelson of Purdys, NY and Anne Stark Locher of Greenwich were uninjured as a result of the collision.
Jill Newmark Haskel, age 89, of 2305 Theall Road in Rye, sustained serious injuries, was transported by Greenwich Emergency Medical Services to Greenwich Hospital, and was pronounced deceased. A next-of-kin notification was subsequently made. All three involved vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene by Post Road Auto Body.
The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad responded to the scene to assist with scene processing. This case remains actively under investigation. Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Trooper Daniel Sottini #361 via email at Daniel.Sottini@ct.gov.
