On Wednesday afternoon January 28, 2026, Rye FD responded to a roof fire at Aurora Restaurant in downtown Rye at 60 Purchase Street. At 4:02 pm Rye FD was dispatched for the report of smoke inside a commercial structure.
According to City officials, first-arriving units were on scene in under sixty seconds and found everyone safely evacuated. Crews identified a small fire located on the roof at the rear of the building. An aerial ladder was positioned to the front of the structure, while ground ladders were deployed to the rear to provide access. Firefighters opened and removed sections of roofing materials to reach the fire, allowing crews to extinguish all visible fire and check for any extension. The incident was quickly brought under control, resulting in minimal damage.
The Rye PD assisted by securing the scene, shutting down a section of roadway, and managing traffic. Auto-aid departments from Larchmont and Rye Brook responded to assist with checking adjacent structures for extension and securing a positive water supply. Additional resources from the Harrison and Purchase Fire Departments were relocated to Rye FD headquarters on Locust Avenue to provide coverage for additional calls and to remain readily available if needed.
The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team responded and investigated the incident. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, originating from an attempt to remove ice from the roof and gutter area. All units were returned to service by 5:35pm.
