MyRye.com welcomes college and high school interns from the City of Rye throughout the year. One of our interns in the summer of 2025 was Riley McCarthy, currently a freshman at Providence College. She completed this Q&A interview with us at the conclusion of her internship.
You can read interviews with various MyRye.com interns. If you have an interest in writing, editing, photography or marketing, please apply to our internship program. We are currently accepting applications for summer 2026.
Your Name: Riley McCarthy
Your Title: MyRye.com intern
Describe yourself in one word: Loyal
MyRye.com: What appealed to you about local journalism and the MyRye.com internship?
McCarthy: I was drawn to interning at MyRye.com to learn more about the community and different aspects of writing. To see if I wanted to further my education in this area for the future.
Describe a typical day during your internship.
McCarthy: A typical day for me would start off at either going in person or online zoom call at 10am for an hour stand up meeting to check in or the occasional days of a speaker joining to share their experiences in a similar field of work. Then I would continue my project of the editorial Q & A Eating Rye piece and my focus is in Port Chester so whether I would go and walk in restaurants and talk to people for more information or call and email from home.
Tell us about one or two of your assignments.
McCarthy: One of my assignments was to photograph the city council meeting and catalog and I learned more about my community and what’s going on in our town. I realized how there are many people so passionately trying to make our town a better place and more should attend the meetings.
What happens at the daily stand-up meeting?
McCarthy: At the daily stand up meetings we all talk about our previous work days and our assignments for the following day and a chance to ask any questions.
The MyRye.com interns heard from various guest speakers, all with connections to local media. What were three of the more interesting things you learned?
McCarthy:
- Catherine Cioffi, communication director for Westchester County, showed me that there is so much time to find where you want to be and learn at all your previous jobs and always make connections with people and reach out.
- Mark Lungariello, editor at The New York Post, who showed me that there are different points of view to the story and it matters to stick to your opinions and focus on the real story.
Where are you currently in college?
McCarthy: I’m going to Providence College for fall 2025!
Do you plan to study writing, English or journalism as part of your academic and extracurricular activities?
McCarthy: I continue to focus more on writing and literature. For my fall schedule I am excited to take an introduction to literature class.
Thanks Riley!
