MyRye.com welcomes college and high school interns from the City of Rye throughout the year. One of our interns in the summer of 2025 was Jackson Beatty, currently a freshman at University of Colorado at Boulder. He completed this Q&A interview with us at the conclusion of his internship.
You can read interviews with various MyRye.com interns. If you have an interest in writing, editing, photography or marketing, please apply to our internship program. We are currently accepting applications for summer 2026.
Your Name: Jackson Beatty
Your Title: MyRye.com intern
Describe yourself in one word: Social
MyRye.com: What appealed to you about local journalism and the MyRye.com internship?
Beatty: I have always been interested in taking photos, so when I saw the opportunity to work with MyRye.com with photography it made me excited.
Describe a typical day during your internship.
Beatty: Typically, I would sit down for the morning meeting. After that, I would work with another kid on the internship, Will Crawford-Rubin, and go into Greenwich to help with his project. Along with this, I would go to events or places and take different pictures.
Tell us about one or two of your assignments.
Beatty: One of my favorite assignments was the Memorial Day parade. It was pretty cool to have a new view on this event. I had gone as a kid and walked in the parade, but never had I been given the task to cover it. I was glad to have a pretty cool opportunity to take photos and have them potentially used in an article.
What happens at the daily stand-up meeting?
Beatty: Usually we would go over our plans for the day or the work we had to do. It was helpful because it kept me on track and aided the overall process.
The MyRye.com interns heard from various guest speakers, all with connections to local media. What were three of the more interesting things you learned?
Beatty:
- Martin Nisenholtz [former CEO, New York Times Digital]: He had an incredibly insightful view into the world of online media and how everything worked
- Mark Lungariello [editor, The New York Post]: Talked about playland and what was wrong with it. Pretty cool to hear his side of the story and his view on the playland scandal
- Charlie Morris [sportswriter, MyRye.com]: How he has become a better writer with time and how he has improved as a writer overall
Where are you currently in college?
Beatty: I will be a rising freshman at University of Colorado at Boulder. I will be majoring in economics and minoring in business administration, but will also be able to photograph the nearby Flat Irons and other nature.
Do you plan to study writing, English or journalism as part of your academic and extracurricular activities?
Beatty: I might want to study photography as a minor. I’m not fully sure yet.
Will you continue to study writing, English or journalism as part of your academic and extracurricular activities?
Beatty: I’m not sure if I will pick up writing, as it’s never really been my strong suit, but I want to continue taking pictures. It’s been something I’ve been interested in ever since I got a phone, so I definitely want to continue it going into college.
Thanks Jackson!
