The Rye Boys Squash team suffered a defeat in their final regular season match on Wednesday, February 4, as they fell to Darien 5-2. The Garnets wrap the season with losses in five consecutive matches, although their most recent defeat was their best effort of the bunch.
“Players are the game are Michael Talbott and Henry Ellis,” Head Coach Quan Huynh told MyRye.com after the match. “Both senior players were able to secure the two wins for the Garnets.”
Talbott wraps up a very strong season having only lost two games individually, winning the other ten. Ellis was also key, earning a victory playing up in the lineup with Rye still operating shorthanded.
The Garnets almost pulled out an upset win, but Philip Nemeth (#5 slot) and Owen Karl (#7 slot) both fell in five-game matchups. Had those razor-tight matchups been switched, Rye would have been victorious. However, they must settle for a shared second place finish in the Fairwest League, making it top-two finishes for two straight years.
“The Garnets are looking forward to getting some rest and looking forward to having their #1 player, Charlie Rodilosso, back in the lineup in time for Nationals,” Huynh continued. “The Garnets will start preparing for US HS Squash Nationals, which is the weekend of February 20th.”
The national tournament in Philadelphia, PA, is the final event on the calendar other than practices for the Garnets. Last year, Rye competed but struggled at Nationals, albeit playing in a higher division that expected. This year, they should be back in Division 4 and will have a chance to have fun and win some squash games from February 20-22.
