Athlete of the Month is a series where MyRye.com profiles the best athletes of each month throughout the academic year, as selected by Rye Athletics. Today, we look at senior Jack Anderson of the Rye Wrestling team, who earned Rye High School’s Athlete of the Month honors for January 2026.
Anderson is the type of athlete every coach has in mind: a great representation of his program on the mat, and perhaps an even better representation off of it. The sturdy senior is 39-4 so far in 43 matches on the year, and makes an impact as a well-respected leader and teammate when it is not his turn to compete.
“Jack is one of the nicest, kindest people I’ve ever met,” Head Coach Brian Scher told MyRye.com. “He makes friends with everyone. All the adults and students know him and love him. He’s really a very special kid.”
Anderson’s .907 personal win percentage is a top mark in New York State high school wrestling, and he placed third at the Section 1 Championships in January. His success this campaign has earned him the right to compete in the State Championship round to close out the season later this month.
“When he steps on the mat, he is a different person,” Scher continued. “Very intense, very physical. “Opponents – win or lose – leave feeling like they’ve been through a battle.”
Anderson is the fifth Athlete of the Month this year, joining Carson Miller (Football, December 2025), Clare Nemsick (Girls Soccer, November 2025), Lex Cox (Boys Soccer, October 2025) and Emma Lunstead (Volleyball, September 2025).
