Your Name: Sebastian Mann
Your Title: MyRye.com intern
Describe yourself in one word: Driven
MyRye.com: What appealed to you about local journalism and the MyRye.com internship?
Mann: I was interested in the opportunity to expand my journalistic skills in a low-pressure and supportive environment. On top of this, the chance to go around my local area and cover what was going on seemed very appealing.
Describe a typical day during your internship.
Mann: I would start by focusing on what my goal was for the day. Usually it was to go to visit restaurants in Greenwich. In the morning I would print out the Q&A sheets and bring them to Greenwich to give out to restaurants. In the afternoon I would send emails and join the daily standup meeting. Depending on the day there were also various writing pieces I had to work on as well.
Tell us about one or two of your assignments.
Mann: One event I covered was a group of kids in Rye attempting to set the world record with the longest chain of LEGO minifigures. For this I went to the high school track in Rye, however it started pouring so the event was delayed. I learned that calendars can be fluid and I also learned about good communication as I got in touch with the mother of the kid setting the record and she greatly helped me. She sent me pictures of the event that were quality and helped me get all the specifics right. It taught me that there are many cool events going on in the community that can go under the radar.
What happens at the daily stand-up meeting?
Mann: The stand-up meetings were a great time to bring the interns together to go over their work for the day and lay out any events we needed to be aware of.
Do you plan to study writing, English or journalism as part of your academic and extracurricular activities?
Mann: I am looking to major in Journalism, Public Policy, or some other humanities major. No matter where I go, I plan on joining the school paper.
Will you continue to study writing, English or journalism as part of your academic and extracurricular activities?
Mann: At my high school I am working as the editor in chief of the school paper. I am continuing to prepare for working more in journalism in college.
