Doja Cat, born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini on October 21, 1995, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and performer known for her genre-blending sound, sharp lyricism, and playful yet provocative public persona. Rising from internet obscurity to global stardom, she has become one of the most distinctive pop artists of her generation.

Early Life and Artistic Roots

Doja Cat was born in Los Angeles, California, to a painter mother and a musician father. Her creative upbringing exposed her early to music, dance, and visual art. As a child, she studied ballet and tap, later becoming deeply involved in hip-hop dance—training that would shape her highly physical, expressive performance style.

During her youth, Doja Cat spent part of her childhood living in Rye, New York. While in Rye, she attended elementary school in New York City and continued developing her interests in dance and performance.

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

After returning to California, Doja Cat began releasing music online as a teenager, posting tracks to SoundCloud that showcased her offbeat humor and genre-fluid instincts. Her 2018 single “Mooo!” went viral, introducing her to a global audience and signaling her ability to merge meme culture with genuine musical craft.

Her debut studio album Amala (2018) laid the groundwork, but it was Hot Pink (2019) —featuring the chart-topping hit “Say So” — that cemented her mainstream success. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, propelled by radio play, TikTok virality, and a remix with Nicki Minaj.

Artistic Evolution and Critical Acclaim

Doja Cat’s subsequent albums, Planet Her (2021) and Scarlet (2023), demonstrated growing artistic range and confidence. Planet Her delivered polished pop-rap with futuristic flair, while Scarlet leaned darker and more aggressive, emphasizing lyricism over crossover appeal. Across these projects, she has earned multiple Grammy Awards, MTV VMAs, and consistent critical praise.

Connection to Rye, New York

Soon after her birth in Los Angeles, she and her mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, moved to Rye, where she spent about five years living with her maternal grandmother, who was an architect and painter. Around age eight, she relocated with her mother and brother back to Los Angeles, California.

Legacy

Doja Cat is widely regarded as one of the most inventive pop artists of the 21st century, redefining what it means to be a mainstream musician in the internet age. With her ability to shapeshift across sounds, aesthetics, and personas, she continues to challenge industry norms—bringing with her a life story that stretches from Los Angeles to Rye, and ultimately, to the world stage.
