The Westchester County Department of Health (DOH) has closed the beach at Coveleigh Club in Rye for Tuesday, August 4 and Wednesday, August 5, 2026 due to the 1.76 inches of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The DOH preemptively closed the beach, along with others in Mamaroneck and New Rochelle, due to the heavy rainfall.
The Coveleigh Club beach was just closed on Sunday, July 19; Monday, July 20 and Wednesday, July 22 for similar reasons.
Heavy rains and discharges from stormwater drains directly affect Long Island Sound waters. As a result, these waters may contain high levels of harmful bacteria that may cause illness after a heavy rain. The bacterial contamination is from road runoff into drainage outfalls near these beaches.
These beaches are allowed to reopen on Thursday, August 6, 2026 unless significant additional rainfall occurs.
Threshold levels have been established by the DOH to promote a guide for the closing of beaches located within the protected area of Mamaroneck Harbor, the open water of Coveleigh and Davenport Neck in New Rochelle.
- Greater than 1/2 inch of rain = 1 day closure
- Greater than 1 inch of rain = 2 day closure
- Greater than 2 inches of rain = to be determined
If you plan on going to Coveleigh or other nearby beaches after a rainfall, check to make sure they are open by calling the beach.
