The Rye Police Department is issuing fresh warnings about your U.S. mail and the cars sitting in your driveway.
The message is “walk it inside and lock it up.”
Purdy Avenue Post Office: Walk It Inside
Police have seen multiple attempts of individuals attempting to steal letters from the post office boxes outside the Rye post office. The perpetrators typically put glue traps inside the mailbox. A resident will put their mail in the mailbox and then the perpetrator will be able to easily recover the letter and its contents. From that point, checks can be stolen and personal information can be taken and used to rip you off.
“Anything that you’re planning on mailing out, just please drop it off inside the post office,” said Rye PD Detective Sergeant Chris Salguero.
The PD has seen three of these U.S. mail rip-off schemes on Purdy Avenue since the beginning of September.
Your Driveway: Lock It Up
The next message seems like a perpetual drumbeat the police department has had to bang over the heads of residents year after year: lock your cars, lock your cars, lock your cars. When you lock your shiny new car your rearview mirror automatically retracts. When you don’t lock your shiny new car, the bad guy sees your rearview mirror out and you’ve just helped that person identify an target (that would be you!). Congratulations! You’ve just put yourself, your family, and the police department in danger.
In the last week, the police department says they have received “numerous reports” of vehicles being rummaged through, particularly in the Greenhaven and Hicks Park neighborhoods. Lock your cars and do not leave keys, wallets, valuables, or other personal property inside your vehicle, and never leave your key fob in the car.
“They’re just rummaging through the cars, right?, PD’s Salguero told MyRye.com. “Or if they’re looking to actually steal the cars, we just need people to lock their car doors. That’s what it comes down to. Lock your doors, and none of this happens.”
