The Rye Football team bounced back from their last loss in a big way on Friday, September 18, as they shut out Eastchester 51-0. The Garnets played nearly a perfect game for their second win of the season, honoring Hamish Fenton on Pediatric Cancer Awareness night at Nugent Stadium. Most of the crowd and Rye players alike donned purple on an emotional night and throughout the big win.
“The players knew they had to bounce back, get back a little bit of our – for lack of a better word – mojo,” head coach Dino Garr told MyRye.com after the game. “It was a great opportunity for all our players to get in and play football.”
The Garnets surged out to a 35-0 lead at the half, allowing them to empty the bench in the third and fourth quarters. Quarterback Charlie Brady led an efficient offense before he lifted his foot off the gas pedal, as he attempted zero passes after halftime. On the other side of the ball, Rye put together a clutch goal line stand and cut another Eagles’ drive short with a fumble, two major blows for a struggling offense.
“Eastchester gave us two of our best games last year,” Garr said. “This year, they’re hurting a bit with numbers.”
More importantly than the score, Rye and Eastchester played to honor pediatric cancer awareness, a cause especially close to the hearts of the Rye community. Garnet players wore ‘Hamish Strong’ stickers on the backs of their helmets in remembrance of Hamish Fenton, a bright light in the community who lost his battle to cancer in the spring of 2026. His older brother, Jagger, is a captain for the Garnets and is always a big part of Garr’s gameplan.
A fellow captain, Benji Kaplan, was announced as the first winner of a scholarship started in honor of Hamish. Kaplan was awarded $2,000.
Rye (2-1) travels to Mount Vernon for their next matchup on Saturday, September 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00pm for the road contest in Week 3. Replay the recent win over Eastchester here.
