The Rye Girls Soccer team added to their thrilling start to the 2026 season on Wednesday, September 9, as they drew Albertus Magnus 2-2. The Garnets fell behind 2-0 after the first half, but gathered themselves and rallied to steal a draw against the high-flying Falcons.
“Rye had an exciting match against nationally ranked Albertus Magnus, showing tremendous grit and determination to battle back,” head coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com. “After a difficult first half, the Garnets regrouped at halftime and focused on improving their defensive shape and creating more opportunities. Julia Carballo was outstanding at center back, helping settle the team and organize the back line.”
Ryann O’Donnell got Rye on the board with an outstanding strike into the right corner to make it 2-1 Falcons. The Garnets continued to push from there, but the comeback effort seemed to come up short when their best chance came inches shy in the 78th minute. An Albertus Magnus defender made a goal-line clearance to temporarily prevent the tying goal, without much time left for another push.
However, with 16 seconds left, Shira Rand drew a foul just beyond the box, paving the way for Hannah Jachman to go for goal. She hit a rocket into the upper-right corner to tie the game, 2-2, and send half of a polarized crowd into a frenzy.
“It was a tremendous display of grit and determination by the Garnets,” Savage said.
Rye (2-0-1) will travel to Arlington on Monday, September 14, to take on another powerhouse Class AAA program in their next contest. Despite not earning a win on Wednesday, this result will almost certainly stand as one of the Garnets’ best efforts when this season is said and done.
