According to officals, there has been a fire at the iconic wooden dragon coaster at Rye Playland Saturday evening, September 19, 2026. Available fire alarm logs show a Rye Fire Department alarm at 8:42 in the evening on Saturday. Other online sources show Rye FD has been joined at Playland by Rye Brook Engine & Larchmont TL.
“Fire on the Dragon Coaster, quick knock down so damage but fixable,” Rye FD Captain Clyde Pitts told MyRye.com.
The cause is under investigation.
County officials said they could only confirm the fire and said no other information was available.
Playland’s Dragon Coaster is 97 years old. It originally opened on July 20, 1929. According to one subreddit, the Dragon Coaster is only one of 103 wooden roller coasters in the United States.
Back in 2017, Playland’s historic carousel was badly damaged by fire. It took four years before the park reopened that ride in 2021.
