Athlete of the Month is a series where MyRye.com profiles the best athletes of each month throughout the academic year, as selected by Rye Athletics. Today, we look at senior Peter Wilmot of the Rye Boys Soccer team, who earned Rye High School’s Athlete of the Month honors for September 2026.

“Peter is a foundational piece of our soccer program,” team head coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “He’s a tireless ball winner, a steady distributor, and an even-keeled personality. I can’t think of anyone in the past 30 years of Rye soccer who has played his position as well as he does.”

The star center midfielder plays every important minute for the Garnets and helped them to a perfect 9-0 record in the month of September. He has battled through minor injuries all season, yet continues to make an impact every game. As the calendar flipped to October, Rye began scoring more goals on set pieces – including corner kicks – helping Wilmot rack up some points. His game is not one that reflects in the box score, but both his coaches and his teammates still understand his irreplaceability.

“[Wilmot] puts his body on the line for his teammates, does all the dirty work without ever looking for recognition, and never complains, even when playing through pain,” associate coach Jon Tuttle said. “He’s the engine of our team, and the sacrifices and heart he brings to every match never go unnoticed by me.

“As his coach, I couldn’t be prouder of the player and person he is.”

Junior defender Carter Hudspeth also lauded Wilmot for his decisive play and admirable leadership qualities. “Not only is Peter a great player on the field, but he is also the hardest worker,” Hudspeth told MyRye.com. “Even in games where the opponent did everything in their power to make him a non-factor, Peter has been able to consistently make an impact in things that don’t get shown in the box score, like his defensive effort and distribution. Without Peter, our season would have gone a lot differently.”

Wilmot is well on his way to earning All-New York State recognition for the second consecutive season as he looks to lead the Garnets on another deep playoff run. Rye reached the state finals in 2025, and they have their sights set on winning their last game of the season one year later. They will need Wilmot to be at his best to accomplish that goal. Their playoff run continues in the sectional semifinals at home tonight.

Wilmot intends to enroll in a United State service academy upon graduation in June. He is the first Rye High School senior to win Athlete of the Month this academic year.
