The Rye Field Hockey team’s early goal was enough against Ursuline on Saturday, October 3, as they topped the visiting Koalas 1-0. The Garnets, donning pink jerseys and socks for their Play for Pink game, have now won five consecutive games, the most recent of which helped them clinch a regular season league championship.

“Ursuline did well defending us today,” head coach Valerie Montano told MyRye.com. “We had a lot of opportunities and just had some trouble finishing on them.”

Rye outshot the Koalas 23-3, but only managed to squeak one goal past the Ursuline defense. Izzy Thomas deflected a shot-pass from Caroline Kmetz into the back of the net in the first quarter to break the ice. Back after missing a game due to illness, Tessa Zicari only had to make two stops to preserve the shutout.

“[Kmetz] had a great game today,” Montano said. “She worked from endline to endline and did a nice job helping us generate an attack on the right side.”

Rye (6-3) hosts White Plains in their next game on Tuesday, October 6, at 5:30pm at Nugent Stadium.
