The top-ranked Rye Girls Soccer team rolled along in the sectional semifinals on Thursday, October 29, as they shut out Bronxville 5-0. The Garnets are now 3-0 in the postseason this season and have outscored their first three opponents 17-0.
“Rye delivered a strong performance in the Section 1 semifinal match against Bronxville,” head coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com after the game. “Bronxville came out with plenty of energy, but Rye quickly settled into its game, controlling possession and creating scoring opportunities.”
Just eight minutes into the action, Rye earned a corner kick, which Shira Rand delivered and Harkin Brown finished. The goal jumpstarted the Garnets’ offense and allowed them to play from in front for the entire night. Charlotte Keenan doubled the lead before Rand collected her second assist via a slick set up to Fiona Marino, whose goal increased the lead for the home team to 3-0 at the half.
Rand quashed any thought of a Bronxville surge in the second with a quick goal to bring her to three points on the evening, and Keenan earned the brace before the final whistle with her second of the match.
“Defensively, Julia Carballo, Ella Fleckten, and Eleanor Pandl turned in outstanding performances, helping Rye maintain control throughout the match,” Savage continued.
Rye (17-0-2, 3-0 postseason) will aim for another sectional championship on Sunday, November 1, as they face Somers in the Section 1 Class A Championship game. The contest is set for Arlington High School and begins at 12:30pm. Rye defeated Somers 5-0 in their only regular season meeting this year, back on October 3.
